Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire (Ménerbes)
The Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire is a former Carmelite monastery near Ménerbes ( Département Vaucluse ) in France .
history
According to legend, the original structure of the monastery goes back to a hermitage of St. Castor of Apt , who is said to have lived here. Louis IX von France stopped here in 1254 on the way back from the crusade to the Holy Land and founded a small priory for accompanying Carmelites on a hill overlooking the Luberon .
Its remote location probably meant that the priory complex with the monastery church, cloister and convent buildings consecrated to St. Hilary has remained closed. The year 1254 is engraved on a wall in the monastery church, which was built in the transitional style. The simple and strict single-nave building ends with a straight choir closure with three lancet windows. Two side chapels were added in the 14th century.
The monastery has been a listed building since 1975.
