Viens is a french commune in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Apt in the Apt arrondissement .

The place is in the middle of the Regional Natural Park of Luberon . The first mention of it goes back over a thousand years. The old village center, located on a rocky knoll above the valley of the Coulon , still bears completely medieval features: houses made of natural stone, centuries-old gateways, small green courtyards, narrow streets that open again and again to small terraces to enjoy the view of the Luberon and to release the Montagne de Lure . Strict building regulations have made it possible to preserve historical buildings and prevent construction work that would destroy the original character. As a result, no mass tourism could develop in this region . Viens, on the other hand, has a range of holiday apartments that are primarily intended to appeal to families with children.

Viens has 636 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), around half of whom are distributed among 21 foreign nationalities. Outside the village center, small quarters with typical villas have emerged in recent years, which are mainly used as second homes by French people from Marseille , Lyon , Paris and many Germans. Many artists have also settled in Viens and the surrounding area.

In the place is the nationally known beekeeping Bresc , whose honey is exported to the USA .

Four kilometers from Viens there is a former monastery that now houses the Hotel St. Paul.

In the 16th century St. Ferreol Chapel, there are regular art exhibitions and concerts in the summer months.
