history

The fortified village, founded in the 11th century, was all but extinct by the mid-15th century until Fouqet d'Agoult , the Baron of La Tour-d'Aigues, acquired control and began repopulating. His efforts were not without success, but only his descendant Louise d'Agoult saved the deserted place. A decree from 1505 provided for the settlement of 32 families from neighboring villages and valleys. Since Waldensians had also settled in La Motte-d'Aigues, the village was destroyed by Catholic troops in the course of the Waldensian massacre in 1545 . After the French Revolution , freedom of religion could be regained, but an unstoppable rural exodus caused the town to decline.

Protestant Church

The church of St-Florentin from 1420 was rebuilt in the 19th century and used to be outside the village. Today it is intended for Catholic worship, but was in the meantime Protestant from 1560 to 1620.

The current Protestant church was built in 1904 and designed by architect Payan. Its two previous buildings were demolished on royal orders in 1663 and in the 19th century for security reasons.
