The municipality of Mirabeau is located in the southeast of the Vaucluse department. It is surrounded by the communes of Beaumont-de-Pertuis , Grambois , La Tour-d'Aigues , Pertuis in the Vaucluse department and by the commune of Jouques in the Bouches-du-Rhône department . traffic
The départementale route D973 runs on the west-east axis coming from Pertuis and meets the D996 east of the town center. The D996 continues eastwards from the junction to Manosque and joins the A51 autoroute to the south , which leads to Aix-en-Provence .
The closest train station is Pertuis , which provides connections to the cities of Lyon , Marseille and Aix-en-Provence .
history
The village, perched on a hill, experienced considerable development in the Middle Ages due to its proximity to the Durance. In the 16th century, the Lord of Forcalquier received the privilege of Queen Johanna to set up a ferry and the right to levy taxes on people, goods and rafts made from driftwood . The ferry port contributed to the development of the place and several hostels opened . The village received a large city wall , but was weakened in the following centuries by the ongoing disputes between its various liege lords.
The community gained fame through the Marquis de Mirabeau , who at the beginning of the revolution played an important role as spokesman for the Third Estate in the Estates General . Mirabeau's prosperity declined in the 19th century with the construction of a bridge over the Durance and the establishment of a railway line.
