View of Maubec

Maubec is a French commune with 1,930 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Maubec is about eight kilometers east of Cavaillon and is neighboring with the municipalities of Robion , Taillades and Oppède .

The municipality is located at the western end of the northern Luberon in the middle of the Luberon Regional Nature Park and is divided into two districts: Coustellet in the valley of the Coulon River and the old town on the mountain slope.

history

The oldest human traces can be traced back to the end of the Neolithic (2300 to 1800 BC ). In the Maillet cave on the edge of the Luberon, a burial site from this period was found, which housed a vase as well as copper and shell jewelry.

In Gallo-Roman times, the place was not far from the Via Domitia , which led from Italy to Spain . Two Gallo-Roman tombs were also discovered near Maubec.

It was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In 1251 Maubec belonged to the Comtat Venaissin and was a fief of the Toulouse Count Alfons of Poitiers . After Alfons' death, Maubec was passed on to several landlords. Until 1316 the place belonged to Bernard de Claret, then to his son Pierre Claret and finally in 1477 to the Brancas family . At this time , Waldensians from the Alps and Piedmont also settled in this area. Until 1529 Maubec was partly in papal possession. Gaucher de Brancas acquired full sovereignty over the fiefdom that belonged to the powerful Brancas-Villars family until the Revolution. The castle was burned down in 1562 during the Huguenot Wars by Protestants led by François de Beaumont and later rebuilt. The community was largely spared from the French Revolution and was reintegrated into the Comtat Venaissin in 1791. In the middle of the eighteenth century, many important facilities were relocated to the Coustellet valley, which led to the gradual depopulation of the old town. The old houses between the bell tower and the castle were demolished and replaced by modern buildings since the 1960s . In 1928, today's town hall was built.
