Lauris is a French municipality with 3856 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse and the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
Lauris is located in the south of the Vaucluse department and is surrounded by the municipalities of Puget , La Roque-d'Anthéron and Puyvert . The closest major cities are Apt in the northeast and Pertuis in the southeast, both 16 km away.
In the north of the municipality, the mountains of rises Luberon with the Luberon Regional Nature Park , to which the municipality belongs. In the south flows the Durance , which also forms the border with the Bouches-du-Rhône department .
traffic
The D973 runs south of the community center on an east-west axis. The Cheval-Blanc-Pertuis railway runs parallel to this, but has not been open to passenger traffic since 1971.
history
The settlement of the municipality goes back to prehistoric times due to the favorable location on the Durance . At the end of the Neolithic , the Lagozza culture was particularly widespread in this area, as evidenced by the Lauris-Puyvert stele . The place was first mentioned in 1079. In the Middle Ages , Lauris was first in episcopal ownership and was then administered by the Counts of Provence . In 1552 Lauris was a fief of François de Pérussis and was under the rule of the Dukes of Lesdiguières in the seventeenth century . In the eighteenth century the Marquis d'Arlatan controlled the village. After the region was depopulated as a result of the plague , Protestants settled in many places in the southern Luberon . Lauris, as one of the few parishes spared from the plague, remained mostly Catholic . There was a boom in agriculture in the nineteenth century . Lauris is best known around the world for growing asparagus .
