history
Excavations at the hypogeum of Sanguinouse have uncovered a cemetery from the Copper Age (−2300 to −1900). It contained fifty to sixty corpses, which were buried in an area of ten square meters. On their side there were flint blades, arrowheads, scraping knives, but also reliefs on which funeral meals can be seen. The meals consisted of sheep, wild boar, deer, horse and rabbit.
In 1113 the village was named Rocha .
On the night of December 10, 1573, the village was taken by Huguenots from Ménerbes and Joucas . They left the place six days later, accompanied by a caravan with sixty oxen, three hundred pigs and a hundred mules on which their prey was loaded.
First written records tell of viticulture in the area, which is said to have started in the seventeenth century.
In 1950, on the initiative of Robert Schuman , the depopulated village took in people of French origin from the Romanian Banat who were forced to leave this region after the Second World War . After the Ottomans left and the ensuing wave of mainly German-speaking emigration, the ancestors of these people settled in the Romanian plain of the Banat in the eighteenth century. → see also: Settlement of the Banat in France .
