Saint-Romain-en-Viennois is a French municipality with 802 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Arrondissement of Carpentras .

geography

Saint-Romain-en-Viennois is located about 3 km northeast of Vaison-la-Romaine in the north of the Vaucluse department. Other surrounding communities besides Vaison are Villedieu , Puyméras , Faucon , Entrechaux and Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison . The nearest major cities are Valréas in the north-west ( 17 km ), Carpentras in the south ( 23 km ) and Orange in the south-west ( 28 km ).

The community is located northeast of the Dentelles de Montmirail rocky landscape and a little north of the Ouvèze River . The Lauzon , which flows as a right tributary into the Ouvèze, flows just past the town center .

traffic

The department road D938 runs on the north-south axis from Vaison-la-Romaine in the direction of Nyons . To the north of the municipality, the D46 branches off from this road to Mollans-sur-Ouvèze .

history

The place initially belonged to the Principality of Orange in the 12th century and then became the property of the Templars . According to a document from 1220, Saint-Romain-en-Viennois was annexed as a priory to the island of Barbe near Lyon .

From the 15th century the fiefdom was divided between several landlords . In 1573 Protestants from Nyons took the village. During the French Revolution , the community was briefly named Romain-sur-Lauzon.
