Puyméras ( Occitan Puègmeiràs ) is a French municipality with 595 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Arrondissement of Carpentras .
geography
Puyméras is located about five kilometers northeast of Vaison-la-Romaine and occupies a corner in the north of the Vaucluse department, which borders the Drôme department . The surrounding communities are Faucon , Saint-Romain-en-Viennois and Villedieu in Vaucluse, as well as Mirabel-aux-Baronnies , Piégon , Châteauneuf-de-Bordette , Bénivay-Ollon and Mérindol-les-Oliviers in Drôme. The nearest major cities are Valréas in the north-west ( 17 km ), Carpentras in the south ( 25 km ) and Orange in the south-west ( 30 km ).
The commune is located in the Baronnies countryside, between the Ouvèze and Eygues rivers . The 13.2 km long Lauzon flows past to the west of the town center. It rises in the neighboring municipality of Piégon and flows into the Ouvèze as a right tributary. The highest point in the municipality is the Gros Moure at 846 meters on the northern border with Châteauneuf-de-Bordette and Bénivay-Ollon.

The west of the municipality is crossed by the departmental road D938, which leads from Vaison-la-Romaine in the direction of Nyons . The D46 branches off to the east of the D938 and takes you to Mollans-sur-Ouvèze .
history
Traces of human presence go back to the Neolithic . A flint grinder and a burial site from this time were discovered in the municipality . For the 3rd and 4th century one could Gallo-Roman mining are detected mineral resources.
The Puyméras settlement was first built in the Middle Ages and was under the rule of the Counts of Toulouse for a long time . Due to several marriages and territorial divisions, the fief went to different ruling families such as the Taulignans and the Montaubans .
