Mairie des Lilas is an underground station on line 11 of the Paris Métro and the eastern terminus of this line.

location

The subway station is located in the Paris suburb of Les Lilas, lengthways below Boulevard de la Liberté, east of its confluence with Rue de Paris.

Surname

The station name refers to the town hall (fr: mairie) of the municipality of Les Lilas . This emerged in 1867 from the division of the Romainville community. It got its name from the lilac bushes (fr: lilas) of the nearby gardens that existed there from the time of the Second Empire until the 20th century.

History and description

North entrance with Art Deco style candelabra

The station was put into operation on February 17, 1937. At that time, line 11 coming from Porte des Lilas was extended in an easterly direction beyond the Paris city limits to Mairie des Lilas. It is 75 m long and has two side platforms on two main tracks. The cross-section is elliptical , the ceiling and walls are tiled in white.

The two entrances are at the eastern end of the Boulevard de la Liberté. They are marked by two candelabra (northern entrance) or one designed by Adolphe Dervaux in the Art Deco style . The northern entrance, at the angle between the Rue de Paris and the Boulevard de la Liberté, has a stone parapet, the southern one a metal border.

To the west of the station there is a simple track change, on its east side the three-track underground depot Atelier des Lilas connects .

vehicles

Initially, conventional Sprague-Thomson trains ran on line 11 . In the mid-1950s, it was the first to be prepared for passenger use with rubber-tired vehicles. The MP 55 series was used for the first time on November 13, 1956. In January 1999 they were replaced by the MP 59 series , and MP 73 trains have also been running since 2009 .
