Les Lilas is a French commune in the Seine-Saint-Denis department with 23,045 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The city is located about six kilometers east of Paris and today forms part of its banlieue . It is one of the most densely populated communities in Europe. Les Lilas differs from many other settlements in Seine-Saint-Denis: the proportion of welfare recipients, unemployed and school dropouts is only slightly higher than the average in the Ile-de-France .
Its inhabitants call themselves Lilasia . Lilas' motto is: “J'étais fleur, je suis cité” (roughly: “I have blossomed, I am a city”).

The city is located in the northeastern suburb of Paris in the south of the Seine-Saint-Denis department. The neighboring municipalities are Paris, Le Pré-Saint-Gervais , Pantin , Romainville and Bagnolet .

Les Lilas was created on July 24, 1867 by amalgamating part of the areas of Romainville , Pantin and Bagnolet .
