The label Patrimoine du XXe siècle (identification of cultural heritage of the 20th century ) marks cultural monuments in the field of architecture and urban planning of the 20th century .

history

The label was created in 1999 to respond to Recommendation No. R (91) 13 adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on September 9, 1991 , calling on states to protect 20th century architectural heritage. The label was introduced by a circular signed on June 18, 1999 by the then French Minister of Education , Catherine Trautmann . It was supplemented with two further circulars of October 25, 1999 and March 1, 2001. A working group was formed to plan how the labeling should be implemented. That led to a list of 400 objects.

The first building to be marked was the Dominican convent in Lille . The corresponding plaque was unveiled on September 7, 2000 by Michel Duffour , then Secretary of State for Cultural Heritage and Decentralization of Cultural Heritage , on the Heritage Day . In 2011 almost 2,300 buildings were marked, as of December 31, 2013 almost 2,800 and as of December 31, 2014 almost 2,900, of which a third were not classified as cultural monuments.

In 2016 the label was abandoned and replaced by a label as Architecture contemporaine remarquable (Remarkable contemporary architecture), the function of which differs considerably from that of the label “Patrimoine du XXe siècle” .

function

Procedure

The locally responsible prefect took the objects to be marked from a list of proposals that had previously been drawn up by a regional working group and examined by the regional monument council. Objects classified as cultural monuments were automatically also qualified to receive the label "Patrimoine du XXe siècle" .

Legal effect

In contrast to the classification as a cultural monument, the award of the label had no legal consequences. The object was not a listed building , it is only highlighted by various advertising measures, such as attaching an information board to the building, publications, exhibitions or acceptance into the Base Mérimée . The purpose of the award is to make decision-makers, the general public and users aware of the property and to create a collective awareness of its value in order to promote maintenance and preservation as well as tourism.
