The Saint Leo University is a private university in Roman Catholic sponsorship, based in Saint Leo , about 40 kilometers north of Tampa , Florida .

The college was founded on June 4, 1889 and is closely related to the Benedictine Holy Name Monastery and the Saint Leo Abbey . In 1959 it was given college status , and in 1999 it was given university status . It is one of the leading universities for further education for the US military. Arthur F. Kirk, Jr. has been the principal of the college since 1997.

In addition to the college's headquarters in St. Leo, it has offices in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Orlando. Saint Leo University has over 14,500 students, including 1,500 in St. Leo, 7,600 on various military bases in five US states, and over 4,000 distance students.

Well-known alumni are Anastasio Somoza Debayle , former President of Nicaragua, the Cuban musician Desi Arnaz and the actor Lee Marvin .
