The Catholic Fu Jen University ( Chinese 輔仁 大學 / 辅仁 大学 , Pinyin Fǔrén Dàxué , FJU for short ) is a university sponsored by the Catholic Church in the Xinzhuang district of the city of New Taipei in the north of the Republic of China in Taiwan . It is a re-establishment of the Beijing Catholic University, which was seized by the People's Republic of China .
Fu Jen is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the Chinese-speaking world.
history
The Catholic University of Peking was founded in 1925 by American Benedictine missionaries and was called Fu-Jen University from 1927. The Benedictine Abbot Alfred Joseph Koch OSB was the last Fu Jen Chancellor to come from the Benedictine order before the Steyler Missionary Order took over the management of the university. Pope Pius XI transferred its leadership on April 29, 1933 to the Society of the Divine Word . The first rector after the takeover of the university by the Steyler missionaries was the American Fr. Joseph Murphy SVD (1895–1935), who however died after a short term in office. Thereupon P. General Superior Josef Grendel SVD (1878–1951) appointed the editor of the Anthropos P. Rudolf Rahmann SVD (1902–1985) as the new rector of Fu Jen. Rahmann took up the post in October 1936, which he held until 1945. In 1945 the American P. Harold Rigney SVD (1900–1980) became rector of Fu Jen and Rahmann was deputy rector. In 1949 the university was confiscated by the People's Republic of China and incorporated into the Beijing Pedagogical University in 1952 .
In 1960, Fu Jen University was re-established in Taiwan by the Chinese Bishops' Conference. The Fu-Jen campus (including the attached hospital) is 40 square kilometers and is therefore about the same size as the Vatican City or the Osaka University campus in Toyonaka.
In the 2006 Times Higher Education global ranking , the university was 417 and in 2008 it was 533. It is Taiwan's best private university and one of the top ten universities in Taiwan.
Fu Jen also hosts an A&HCI magazine.
