Emanuel Merian
Emanuel Merian (born March 16, 1732 in Rümlingen , † May 13, 1818 in Basel ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.
Life
Emanuel Merian was the son of pastor Friedrich Merian (1686–1760) and his wife Sara (née Burckhardt) (1690–1768).
He began to study philosophy in 1744 and received his doctorate in 1746 for baccalaureus artium and in 1747 for Magister artium . In 1747 he began to study theology. In 1749 he applied unsuccessfully for the chair of moral philosophy at the University of Basel .
In 1752 he was ordained and from 1753 to 1760 he helped in his father's pastoral office. From 1760 to 1764 he was pastor in Bretzwil and from 1764 to 1766 he was an assistant to St. Leonhard in Basel. From 1766 to 1816 he was pastor at Basel Minster and Antistes in Basel.
Emanuel Merian was married to Anna Katharina (née Merian) (1740–1831) since 1763. They had three children together. His grave is next to that of Johannes Oekolampad ; His Latin epitaph hangs in the Maria Magdalena Chapel of Basel Minster.
Theological work
Emanuel Merian published several collections of songs and in 1779 an enlightening guide for the country school masters. At first he was one of the representatives of the Reasonable Orthodoxy , who criticized the disputes of the school theology and emphasized the living faith and the holiness of life, as well as looking for common ground among the Protestant churches. But due to the radical consequences of the Enlightenment and revolutionary ideas, he then took an increasingly restorative position as an antistes .
In 1809 he wrote an expert report for the mayor of Basel on the theory of ghost lore by Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling , which led to the ban on the dissemination of the theory in Basel.
