Live and act

Johann David Wyss was the son of a high officer and studied theology and philosophy at the Bern Academy and the Lausanne Academy . From 1766 he was a field chaplain with a Bern regiment abroad. In 1775 he became pastor in Seedorf and two years later at the Bern Minster . In 1803 he retired to his estate in Köniz , where he mainly devoted himself to fruit and beekeeping .

"The Swiss Robinson"

He became well known for his book Der Schweizerische Robinson, based on the example of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe . He had written it down for his children between 1794 and 1798 and did not intend to publish it. This only happened when his son Johann Rudolf Wyss decided to edit the book in 1812. It became a bestseller and is still the book from Switzerland that has been translated into most languages.

On the basis of the Swiss Robinson , Frederick Marryat is said to have created his own Robinsonade Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , which in turn became the most popular adventure story for young people in German-speaking countries in 1841 as the German version of Sigismund Rüstig .

Jules Verne published in 1900 based on the novel Der Schweizerische Robinson von Wyss as a continuation of the novel The Second Fatherland . Verne also took inspiration from this book for the novel Uncle Robinson , an unfinished novel from 1869 to 1870, and for his 1882 novel The Robinsons School .
