August Ludwig Viktor of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (born June 13, 1818 in Vienna ; † July 26, 1881 at Ebenthal Castle in Lower Austria ) was a prince from the Catholic line of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry and royal Saxon major general . From 1831 he accepted the title Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry .

Life

August was the second son of Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld-Koháry (1785-1851) and his wife, the Hungarian Princess Antonie von Koháry (1797-1862), born. He was the brother of King Ferdinand II of Portugal and the father of the Bulgarian King Ferdinand I.

On April 20, 1843, Prince August married Princess Clémentine of Orléans (1817–1907), daughter of the “citizen king” Louis Philippe of France, in the castle of Saint-Cloud . The family lived in the Vienna Palais Coburg . In Coburg he lived in the Bürglaß-Schlösschen . After his mother's death, August became the heir to her extensive estates in Hungary, which made him one of the most important magnates there. August was an honorary member of the Geological Society of Hungary. As the father-in-law of the sister of the presumptive Austrian Empress Stephanie of Belgium , August was raised in rank by Emperor Franz Joseph with the title "Highness" .

After his patron Prince August was in Coburg 1860 consecrated Catholic church of St. Augustine (Coburg) built. Prince August, Princess Clémentine, the three sons: Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria, Prince Philipp and Prince August, as well as his wife Princess Leopoldina of Brazil and their four sons lie in the Kohary crypt of St. Augustin .

August was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Ducal Saxon-Ernestine House Order , the Royal Portuguese Order of Tower and Sword , the French Order of the Legion of Honor , the Royal Belgian Order of Leopold and he was Knight of Honor and Devotion of the Grand Cross of the Sovereign Order of Malta .

In 1885, the Hungarian sculptor Victor Tilgner was commissioned to create a memorial to the late Prince August. This is still today on the Coburg estates in Ebenthal . In addition to a Latin inscription, the following can be read on the base: “Auguste Louis Victor Duc de Saxe Prince de Saxe Cobourg Gotha. A mon mari bien aimé. 1843-1881.
