Amalie of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
Princess Marie Luise Franziska Amalie of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (born October 23, 1848 in Coburg , † May 6, 1894 in Munich ) was a German princess and by marriage duchess of Bavaria.
Life
Amalie was the second daughter of five children of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Princess Clementine d'Orléans .
In the early 1870s, a marriage between Princess Amalie and the Bavarian Prince Leopold (1846-1930) was planned. But it was precisely with this that Empress Elisabeth's youngest brother, Max Emanuel Herzog in Bavaria, fell in love and wanted to marry her. In order to clear up the somewhat confused situation and to satisfy everyone, the empress intervened. She invited Leopold to Gödöllő , where the Archduchess Gisela of Austria was also stayingfound. The Bavarian prince could not refuse the hand of the emperor's daughter because it was too tempting to become the son-in-law of the emperor of Austria. Some time later, Elisabeth, with the help of Countess Festetics, brokered the marriage that was close to her heart: that between her brother Max Emanuel and Princess Amalie.
In 1875 Princess Amalie married Duke Max Emanuel in Bavaria , son of Duke Max Joseph in Bavaria and Princess Ludovika Wilhelmine of Bavaria . The marriage, which is said to have been happy by all reports, had three children:
- Siegfried August in Bavaria (1876–1952)
- Christoph Joseph in Bavaria (1879–1963)
- Luitpold Emanuel in Bavaria (1890–1973)
