Max Emanuel, called Mapperl, was a son of Duke Max in Bavaria (1808-1888) and his wife Ludovika (1808-1892). He was the youngest of ten children, including Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary ("Sisi") (1837–1898).
Military career
Max Emanuel had a passion for the military. In 1865 he became second lieutenant in the 2nd Uhlan regiment "King" and in 1866 took part in the war against Prussia . Max Emanuel was used during the battles near Hünfeld and Hammelburg. From 1867 he served in the 3rd Chevaulegers regiment "Duke Karl Theodor" . He fought with the regiment during the Franco-German War near Wörth , Beaumont , Orléans and the siege of Paris . From 1873 to 1874 Max Emanuel was assigned to the War Academy . However, he only completed the 1st course and then left the academy again. He was then transferred to the 1st Uhlan Regiment and promoted to Rittmeister here in 1875 . In the following year he became major and squadron chief in the 1st Chevaulegers regiment "Emperor Nicholas of Russia" . Max Emanuel was released from this position for health reasons in 1877 and placed à la suite of the regiment. In the years to come, however, he was continuously promoted and finally, as major general in 1887, was appointed commander of the equitation institute in the Maximilian II barracks in Munich. From 1889 he was lieutenant general. In June 1893 Max Emanuel developed severe gastric bleeding, which he succumbed to.
