Marie Adelheid Amalie Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (born July 8, 1846 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , France , † June 3, 1927 in Alcsút , Hungary ) was a princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from the Catholic sidelines and Koháry became Archduchess of Austria by marriage .

Life

Clotilde was the eldest daughter of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818–1881) and his wife Clementine d'Orléans (1817–1907), daughter of the French King Louis Philippe . Her youngest brother Ferdinand became King of Bulgaria in 1887 .

She married Archduke Joseph Karl Ludwig of Austria (1833–1905) on May 12, 1864 in Coburg , son of Archduke Josef Anton of Austria , Palatine of Hungary , and Duchess Maria Dorothea of ​​Württemberg . The princess had received the advertisement during a trip with her family in Constance , where her future husband was also staying with his brother Stefan . The marriage was entered into out of passion and was considered happy.

Clotilde was the bearer of the Star Cross . She died at Alcsút Castle and was buried with her husband and children in the crypt of the royal palace in Buda. The graves were looted and badly damaged in the 1970s. They were restored again in the 1980s.
