Maria Dorothea of Austria
Archduchess Maria Dorothea Amalie of Austria (born June 14, 1867 in Alcsút , Hungary ; † April 6, 1932 ibid) was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen and by marriage the Duchess of Orléans. It came from the Hungarian branch of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen, which went back to Archduke Joseph († 1847) .
Life
Maria Dorothea was the second daughter of seven children of Archduke Joseph Karl Ludwig of Austria (1833-1905) and his wife Princess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1846-1927), daughter of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and princess Clementine d'Orléans . On her father's side she was the great-granddaughter of Emperor Leopold II of Austria . As a talented painter, she received a visual and artistic training from Olga Wiesinger-Florian .
On Nov. 5, 1896 married Archduchess Maria Dorothea in Vienna her second cousin Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans (1869-1926), son of Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans, comte de Paris and the Infanta Maria Isabella d 'Orléans-Montpensier . Her husband was Philip (VIII) pretender to the French throne and was the legal successor and great-grandson of the last French King Louis-Philippe I for the supporters of the House of Orléans-Bourbon . Maria Dorothea was very politically active and organized demonstrations against the French Republic. More than her husband, she was considered the center of royalist propaganda in the Grande Nation .
The marriage of Maria Dorothea, which according to all reports was unhappy, remained childless. After the year-long love affair between her husband and the Australian opera singer Nellie Melba became public, she filed for divorce in 1914; August 19, 1914, the marriage was also by Pope Pius X. canceled . The Duchess of Orléans lived in Alcsút, Hungary, until her death and was buried in the crypt of the Castle Palace in Buda . Her ex-husband rests in the Chapelle royale de Dreux in Dreux .
