Ferdinand Philipp Maria August Rafael of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (born March 28, 1844 in the Palais des Tuileries in Paris , †  July 4, 1921 in Coburg ) was a prince from the Catholic line of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry .

Life

Philipp was born the son of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818-1881) and his wife Clementine d'Orléans (1817-1907), daughter of the French King Louis Philippe . In 1870 he became a major in the Hungarian Landwehr .

On February 4, 1875, Prince Philipp married Princess Louise (1858–1924), daughter of Leopold II , King of the Belgians, and Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria in Brussels .

Philipp was a close confidante of his brother-in-law, Crown Prince Rudolf . On the morning of January 30, 1889, together with Count Josef Hoyos-Sprinzenstein and valet Johann Loschek, he discovered the dead Crown Prince and his underage lover Mary von Vetsera, who had also been shot in the Mayerling Hunting Lodge .

Philipp and Louise's marriage was catastrophic. Louise left her husband in 1896 and they were divorced on January 15, 1906 after Louise was incapacitated in 1898. The reason was the longstanding relationship between Louise and Count Géza von Mattachich-Keglevich (1867–1923), with whom Philip had dueled on the orders of Emperor Franz Joseph . Before that, Louise had had affairs with one of her husband's aides .

Prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Prince Philipp spent his last years in Coburg's Bürglaß-Schlösschen and died there at the age of 77. He was buried in the so-called Koháry crypt of the St. Augustin Church in Coburg. Philip was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece as well as the bearer of the Royal Portuguese Order of the Tower and the Sword .

His Fideikommiss property came in 1921 to the great-nephew Philipp Josias Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1901–1985).

numismatics

Prince Philipp owned an important coin collection from Saxony, the Orient and overseas. He published on oriental numismatics. His universal collection was auctioned off in 1928 by the Leo Hamburger auction house in Frankfurt am Main . Various medals were issued on his person; so in 1875 on his wedding to Princess Louise and in the same year on his honorary membership in the Belgian Numismatic Society.

progeny

Philipp had two children from his marriage:

⚭ 1898 Duke Ernst Günther of Schleswig-Holstein (1863–1921)
