Catherine Hayes (born October 29, 1818 in Limerick , † August 11, 1861 in London ) was an Irish opera singer (soprano).

Life

From 1839 to 1841 Hayes studied singing in Dublin with Antonio Sapio , then in Paris with Manuel Patricio Rodríguez García and finally in Milan with Felice Ronconi . In 1845 she made her debut as an opera singer at the Italian Opera in Marseille as Elvira in Vincenzo Bellini's I puritani . In the same year she made her debut at La Scala in Milan in the title role of Gaetano Donizetti's Linda di Chamounix .

After appearances in Vienna, Venice, Florence, Genoa and Rome, she was engaged at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1849 . Here she sang u. a. Parts from Linda di Chamounix , Lucia di Lammermoor and from operas by Saverio Mercadante , Federico and Luigi Ricci . She performed Irish folk songs in Ireland and gave a concert at Buckingham Palace for Queen Victoria and five hundred invited guests.

In 1851, Hayes went on a tour of America where she was looked after by William Avery Bushnell , the former manager of Jenny Lind . She has given concerts in New York, Boston, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans and more than forty other cities and sang in front of Secretary of State Daniel Webster and President Millard Fillmore . Their tour was sponsored by PT Barnum .

She then appeared in operas and concerts in Peru and Chile, gave a concert in Hawaii and in 1854 sang as the first European opera star in Australia. This was followed by appearances in Calcutta, Singapore and Batavia before she went back to Australia. In 1856 she returned to London, where she married her manager Bushnell in 1857. She gave concerts in England and Ireland until she died of a stroke in 1861.
