Lambert Heinrich von Babo
Lambert Heinrich Clemens von Babo (born November 25, 1818 in Ladenburg / Neckar, † April 15, 1899 in Karlsruhe ) was a German chemist.
Life
Babo was the son of the agronomist Lambert Joseph von Babo and his first wife Karoline Ehrmann. The viticulture scientist August Wilhelm von Babo was his half-brother. After graduating from high school, Babo studied medicine at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich from 1837 and graduated in Heidelberg in 1842 with a doctorate. In the following year he began to study chemistry with Justus von Liebig in Giessen and finished his studies in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1845 with his habilitation.
On September 6, 1847, Babo married Elise Baumgärtner in Freiburg. With her he had a daughter and two sons.
At the University of Freiburg Babo advanced from private lecturer in 1854 to a. o. Prof. and in 1859 o. Prof. As such, he was also appointed as an expert at the grand ducal courts. In 1883 he retired.

Babo determined the water vapor pressure and developed the Babo funnel named after him for heating glass flasks. This consists of an inverted truncated cone made of sheet steel with radially arranged asbestos strips on the inner wall.
He carried out work on the structure of alkaloids, isolation of choline and developed the determination of arsenic for forensic investigations. He made ozone from oxygen and developed evidence for piperidine .
