- December 24th : In the Schifferkirche St. Nikola in Oberndorf near Salzburg the Christmas carol Silent Night, composed by the village school teacher Franz Xaver Gruber based on a text by the vicar Joseph Mohr , is performed for the first time.

- Ludwig van Beethoven : Piano Sonata No. 29 in B flat major, Op. 106 (Hammerklavier Sonata ). The work was considered unplayable for a long time and was only played in public for the first time decades after Beethoven's death by Franz Liszt .

Musical theater
- March 5th : The opera Mosè in Egitto by Gioachino Rossini based on the libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola is premiered with great success at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Due to lack of time, the composer Michele Carafa, who is a friend of Rossini, has also contributed an aria.
- May 16 : World premiere of the opera Orestes by Conradin Kreutzer in Prague
- May 30th : World premiere of the opera Die Rosenmädchen by Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna
- June 30th : Premiere of the opera Le Petit Chaperon rouge ( Little Red Riding Hood ) by François-Adrien Boieldieu at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
- July 29th : World premiere of the opera Berenice in Siria by Michele Carafa in Naples
- September 25th : World premiere of the opera Il Barone di Dolsheim by Giovanni Pacini at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan
- October 12 : The National Theater in Munich , built according to plans by Karl von Fischer , opens after almost seven years of construction with the world premiere of Ferdinand Fränzl's opera Die Weihe .
- November 14th : Premiere of the opera Enrico di Borgogna by Gaetano Donizetti in Venice
- December 3 : The opera Ricciardo e Zoraide by Gioachino Rossini has its successful premiere at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, several weeks late .
- December 17th : World premiere of the opera Una follia by Gaetano Donizetti in Venice. (The work is lost).
- December 26th : World premiere of the opera Elisabetta in Derbyshire, ossia Il castello di Fotheringhay by Michele Carafa in Venice
