Musical theater
- 18th January : World premiere of the opera Didone abbandonata by Saverio Mercadante . The material from the early 18th century has been set to music by more than 60 composers, including Mercadante.
- February 3 : The world premiere of the opera Semiramide ( Semiramis ) by Gioacchino Rossini based on a libretto by Gaetano Rossi takes place at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Rossini wrote the title role for his wife Isabella Colbran .
- February 15 : The opera Cordelia by Conradin Kreutzer with the libretto by Pius Alexander Wolff is premiered at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Not least thanks to its first interpreter Wilhelmine Schröder , the opera becomes an extraordinary success.
- April 11th : The romantic opera Sulmona by Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner is premiered in Stuttgart.
- June 28 : premiere of the opera Abufar, ossia La famiglia araba by Michele Carafa in the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna.
- July 2nd : Premiere of the opera Alfredo il Grande by Gaetano Donizetti in Naples.
- July 28 : Premiere of the opera Jessonda by Louis Spohr in Kassel.
- 23 August : Premiere of the opera Temistocle by Giovanni Pacini . It is the last of many settings of this material from the early 18th century.
- 3rd September : World premiere of the opera Il fortunato inganno by Gaetano Donizetti in Naples.
- September 16 : World premiere of the opera Le valet de chambre by Michele Carafa at the Opéra-Comique, Paris
- October 25 : Premiere of the opera Euryanthe by Carl Maria von Weber in the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna.
- November 20th : Premiere of the opera Sigune , by Conradin Kreutzer at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- December 1st : The world premiere of the second version of the opera Libussa by Conradin Kreutzer takes place in Berlin.
- December 15th : World premiere of the opera La France et l'Espagne , by François-Adrien Boieldieu in Paris, (Hôtel de Ville).
- December 20th : Premiere of the play Rosamunde by Helmina von Chézy with incidental music by Franz Schubert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- December 27th : Premiere of the opera Demetrio by Johann Simon Mayr in Turin. It is Mayr's last opera.
