Theodor Freiherr von Schacht (* 1748 in Strasbourg ; † June 20, 1823 in Regensburg ) was a German composer .

Life

Theodor von Schacht came to Regensburg at the age of eight to the court of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis , where his father Karl Ludwig von Schacht also worked. There he received a court education over the course of 10 years and received his first musical training from the court musicians Küffner and Joseph Riepel . In 1766 Schacht went to the court of the Duke of Württemberg in Stuttgart as a student of the opera composer Niccolò Jommelli (1714–1774) for several years . After studying in Stuttgart and Wetzlar , he returned to Regensburg as a court cavalier in 1771 and was appointed director of court music by Prince Carl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis in 1773 and commissioned to set up an Italian opera . He was also active in other areas of composition (singspiel, symphony, concert, church music) and in 1774 became head director of the court theater and ballroom on Aegidienplatz , which had an annual budget of 20,000 guilders, but whose operation was discontinued in 1786. In 1790 Schacht was appointed Princely Privy Councilor and in 1796 was awarded an honorary salary for life for his services to court music. In 1805, the year Prince Carl Anselm died, Schacht retired and traveled to Vienna to collect musical impressions and to make himself known as a composer. The highlights of this trip included meeting the Beethoven student Archduke Rudolph of Austria and Napoleon I , in whose honor he composed six masses. Schacht only returned to Regensburg in 1812, where he died in 1823.
