Marcos Coelho Neto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcos Coelho Neto (* 1763 in Villa Rica ; † October 23, 1823 there ) was a Brazilian composer .

Coelho Neto was one of the most important colored composers of the Brazilian colonial era. He worked in his hometown as a horn player, trumpeter and composer. He composed numerous church music works, of which the hymn Maria mater gratiae is sung in Brazil to this day.

The attribution of Coelho Neto's works is partly unclear, as his father, the horn player and trumpeter Marcos Coelho Neto of the same name , Paí (* around 1740 in Villa Rica; † August 21, 1806, ibid.), Also worked as a composer, so that in the statement of the composer is often no longer traceable which of the two is meant.
