Anton Madatya Karakaschian

Madatya Karakaschian ( Armenian Մատաթիա Գարագաշեան ; born February 11, 1818 in Constantinople ; † November 26, 1903 ibid) was an Armenian linguist, teacher, publicist and mechitarist .

From 1832 to 1840 Madatya Karakaschian was a seminarist in the Mechitarist monastery in Vienna. 1840-1848 he worked as a teacher and administrator in the seminary. On July 7, 1848 he was entrusted with management duties in the Mechitarist monastery in Smyrna . He returned to Constantinople on July 17, 1849. 1856-1883 he taught at the schools of Hasköy and Beşiktaş, among others, and worked as a translator in the Bible House, which was established in 1872 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions .

From 1860 he published the magazine Liebe (Սեր) together with Boghos Barnasyan and Zephir (Զեփիւռ). From 1881 he published the magazines Masis (Մասիս) and thoughts of a translator (Թերճեմանի Էֆքար) as well as a four-volume critical history of the Armenians (Քննական Պատմութիւն Հայոց). He died in Constantinople on November 26, 1903.
