Martin Friedrich Rabe

Martin Friedrich Rabe (born November 17, 1775 in Stendal , † October 17, 1856 in Berlin ) was a German architect , university professor and Prussian construction clerk . Rabe also made a name for himself as a historian with depictions of the early history of the Mark Brandenburg .

Life

Rabe studied at the Architectural College of the Academy of Arts under Friedrich Becherer and passed the building foreman examination in 1795. He then worked with David Gilly, among others . In 1794 he was involved in the construction of the Marienburg . From 1796 to 1799 he worked as a construction manager in the redesign of Paretz Castle and the village of Paretz by David Gilly. Rabe passed the state examination in front of the building department in 1800 and was employed as a conductor . From 1800 to 1801 he was assigned to Heinrich Gentz and worked on the designs for Weimar buildings. From 1801 to 1804 he was in charge of construction during the expansion of the Weimar Palace by Heinrich Gentz. From 1804 he worked as a building inspector at the Oberhofbauamt, from 1806 at the palace building commission and from 1829 as a palace builder. Parallel to his work in the building administration he was a member of the Senate of the Academy of Arts from 1810 to 1856 and taught as a professor at the Berlin Building Academy until 1831 . Rabe retired in 1842, but continued to conduct extensive art history studies. In January 1848 he was awarded the Prussian Red Eagle Order, 4th class.

Rabe was with Sophia Theodora geb. Frick married. The couple had two sons, the architect Ottomar Friedrich Theodor Rabe (* 1812) and the painter Edmund Rabe .

Martin Friedrich Rabe died on October 17, 1856, one month before his 81st birthday, in Berlin. He was buried in the cemetery of the Dorotheenstädtische and Friedrichswerder communities on Chausseestrasse in Berlin. The grave has not been preserved.
