Joseph Matthäus Aigner (born January 18, 1818 in Vienna ; † February 19, 1886 there ) was an Austrian portrait painter .

Life

As the son of a goldsmith, he first learned his father's craft. Later he was a student of Amerling and Rahl . As commander of the Academic Legion , he took part in the October fights in Vienna in 1848 , was captured and sentenced to death by a court martial for high treason , but pardoned by Prince Windisch-Graetz . Since 1847 he was married to the castle actress Fanny Matras (* 1828, † 1878). In 1874 Aigner was accepted into the Masonic Lodge Zukunft . From 1883 to 1886 he was a member of the Vienna City Council .

He portrayed Emperor Franz Joseph I , Empress Elisabeth , Franz Grillparzer , Friedrich Halm and Nikolaus Lenau , among others . On behalf of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico , he copied pictures in the Belvedere that were intended for the museum in Mexico. He died by suicide .

In 1999, Aignerstraße was named after him in Vienna- Brigittenau (20th district) .
