Christoph Bernhard Verspoell (born May 15, 1743 in Münster ; † January 5, 1818 there ) was a Roman Catholic priest , publicist and hymn poet .

Live and act

Verspoell was a son of Joan Bernard Verspoell, a baker in Münster, and his wife Anna Catharina Becker and was baptized on May 18, 1743 in the Liebfrauen-Überwasser parish church . He grew up with two older sisters, two other siblings had died early. After the mother's death in 1761, the father remarried the following year.

Verspoell spent his entire life in Münster. After school and the seminary he became vicar at St. Lamberti and at the Magdalenenhospital in 1776 ; since January 20, 1779 he was the owner of the Vicarie St. Crucis at St. Ludgeri . He kept these positions until his death.

Education and pastoral care were his central concerns. They were served by his pastoral publications, most of which he wrote together with the pastor of St. Lamberti. Fast devotion to the crucified , fast devotion in the cathedral of Münster , communion devotion of the children , devotion for the poor souls with the Capuchins and rosary brotherhood booklet are some of the titles.

All of these books appeared before 1803, the year of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , which also secularized the Duchy of Münster and the entire church life had to be placed on a new foundation.

Verspoell's hymns, on the other hand, seem to fall into the following decade and a half of his life. It includes text poems as well as melody and organ compositions. In 1810 his chants appeared at Roman Catholic services, together with the attached prayer book (texts), the melodies for the chants at Roman Catholic services and the organ accompaniment to the chants at Roman Catholic services .

My baptismal covenant, especially the song Fest, should always stand , today the text of which has been revised many times, reflects the church reorientation after the end of the old imperial church .

The song O komm, o komm, Emmanuel (GL 1975 902 (MS) 829 (Cologne), GL 2013 754.3 (MS)) is ascribed to him, but is not found in his hymn book.

The newspaper obituary of 1818 attested Verspoell "the reputation of a pious Christian, a worthy clergyman, but above all that of a tireless child friend".
