My baptismal covenant should always be firm

My baptismal covenant should always be firm (1829)
melody

The song Fest should always stand my baptismal covenant is originally a four-stanza Catholic hymn. It comes from the Münster priest Friedrich Matthias Berghaus († 1814) and was published by his brother Christoph Bernhard Verspoell in 1810 and 1829 in his hymn book Gesänge bei Roman Catholic church services with attached prayer book . The melody comes from Chrysanth Joseph Bierbaum (1789–1868), a chaplain to St. Remigius , and was published in Bonn in 1826.

origin

In Verspoell's hymn book, published in the diocese of Münster , this song appears as a sacrament song with the corresponding text on the Corpus Christi festival . Since 1874 it has also spread in the neighboring diocese of Paderborn . As a result, in combination with newly composed stanzas, it became a christening and confession song and spread throughout the German-speaking area. The first stanza is particularly widespread. It is in the diocesan annex Münster des Gotteslobes (2013) under number 847.4, from Paderborn under number 801.1, from Limburg under number 862 and Cologne under number 834.

variants

There are supplements with verse poems by other authors in different combinations, such as in the diocesan annex Passau under number 870 or the stanzas on the renewal of baptism by the Catholic pastoral assistant Johanna Engelmann (* 1901; † 1988) in the diocesan annex Berlin under number 835.

In some diocesan appendices there is a new version in which parts of the text have been changed, for example “I want to belong to the Lord” instead of “I want to hear the Church” and “and [the Lord] wants his word to teach me” instead of “and obedient to theirs teaching [the Church] ”. The original verses 2 to 4 can be found in the diocesan appendix HH / HI / OS under the number 879 and also in the common part of the dioceses of Dresden-Meißen , Erfurt , Görlitz and Magdeburg under the number 840.

text

1.

My baptismal covenant should always be firm,
I want to hear the church!
She should always see me in faith
and obey her teachings!
Thanks be to the Lord, who by grace called me
to his church,
I will never leave her!

2.

You Godman are
truly here with flesh and blood .
And your enjoyment, O greatest good!
Bring blessings to my soul,
you eternal truth, I believe.
In this faith strengthen me
until I see you forever.

3.

Your flesh and blood will
give strength to my spirit in goodness.
And, as your mouth promises,
certainly leads me to eternal life.
I trust you, gracious omnipotence,
in this hope I strengthen me
until I have you one day.

4th

You suffered, died and set a
monument to this love,
that you remain entirely mine and I
remain entirely yours for eternity.
My Jesus, I thank you with love,
increase your love in me,
let me love you forever.
