José Güell y Renté

José Lorenzo Buenaventura Güell y Renté (born September 14, 1818 in Havana , † December 20, 1884 in Madrid ) was a Cuban-Spanish politician and writer.

Life

After completing his legal studies in Barcelona, he became a lawyer in his hometown. But he soon went to Madrid, where in June 1848 he married the Infanta Donna Josepha, sister of the (titular) King Francisco de Asís de Borbón . That was the source of long unpleasantness for him. The royal house was most reluctant to see the marriage and was referred to the royal palace of Valladolid; but in 1854 he headed the popular movement and the insurgent army. So he came to the Chamber as a man of the people and was elected commander of the 4th Battalion of the National Militia in Madrid, always on Baldomero Espartero's side. Exiled to Paris in the storms of 1856, he lived here mainly for literary activity (partly in French); In 1879 he was appointed senator for the island of Cuba. He died in Madrid on December 20, 1884.

Works

In addition to numerous contributions to the liberal Spanish press, he published the poetry collections: "Lagrimas del corazon" (Valladolid 1854) and "Duelos del corazon" (that. 1855); a drama: "Don Carlos" (1879); also the prose works: "Pensiamentos cristianos, filosoficos y politicos" (Valladolid 1854), "Traditions américaines" (1861), "Légende du Montserrat" (1866), "Légende de Catherine Ossema" (1873), "Les deux folies" ( 1879); the historical studies: "Philippe II et Don Carlos devant l'histoire" (1878) and "Los restos de Colon" (Par. 1884), etc. A new edition of his "Poesías" appeared in Paris in 1881.
