Karl Gottlob from Anton
Karl Gottlob Anton , from 1802 by Anton (born July 23, 1751 in Lauban ; † November 17, 1818 in Görlitz ) was a German lawyer , politician , historian and co-founder and president of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences .
Life
Karl Gottlob Anton was born in Lauban on July 23, 1751, the son of a merchant family. After studying at the University of Leipzig , he received his master's degree in 1773 and defended his dissertation in 1774. After 22 years of work (since 1775) as an official advocate , Anton came to Görlitz as a senator in 1782, having acquired the manor Oberneundorf in 1782 . In the past few years he had already made a name for himself in Upper Lusatia as a historian , linguist and author of numerous works. His position as official advocate and legal representative also made him one of the leading personalities in Upper Lusatia .
His works show him today as an excellent expert on the Sorbian language and culture. At the time of the Enlightenment, he made a significant contribution to the development of Sorbian studies in this region with his research results and his organizational skills . So he created the foundations of Slavic studies in Germany. He always maintained good relationships with Sorbian scholars.
In 1779 he proposed to found the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences and for this purpose bought the building at Obermarkt 29 . When the rooms became too narrow for society, it was he who acquired the much larger baroque house at Neißstraße 30 and thus gave society a permanent home. In 1802 he was ennobled.
Anton was an active Freemason in the Görlitz Lodge on the Crowned Snake and has significantly shaped their work.
Karl Gottlob Anton died in Görlitz in 1818 at the age of 67 and was buried in the Görlitz Nikolaifriedhof .
His cousin was the German linguist and orientalist Konrad Gottlob Anton , whose son, the classical philologist Karl Gottlieb Anton , also worked in Görlitz.
He bequeathed his library and his scientific collections to the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences . Today they are kept in the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences in Görlitz and in the Cultural History Museum in Görlitz .
