Emil Julius Hugo Steffenhagen (born August 23, 1838 in Goldap , † September 20, 1919 in Coburg ) was a German legal historian, councilor and librarian.

Life

Emil Julius Hugo Steffenhagen was born in 1838 as the son of the judiciary and lawyer Julius Fernando Steffenhagen (1807–1872) and his wife Isabella Euphrosyne Valeria, nee. Hassenstein (* 1815 in Insterburg), he grew up with seven siblings. Steffenhagen studied law at the University of Königsberg and later switched to literary studies. In 1865 he received his habilitation as a private lecturer at the law faculty. In 1867 he was commissioned by the University of Athens to reorganize the national library there. In 1870 he was appointed city librarian to Gdansk, and in 1871 he was appointed curator of the Königsberg library. In 1872 he was transferred to Göttingen as library secretary.

In 1875 he took over the full-time management of the Kiel University Library as the successor to Henning Ratjen , who had held this position alongside his professorship at the philosophical faculty since 1833. The inadequate space in the library had already prompted Ratjen to plan new buildings. Steffenhagen carried out the construction and in the spring of 1884 was able to move into the first building intended solely for the library. In 1884 Steffenhagen was appointed senior librarian. In 1903 he retired and has lived in Coburg ever since.

Already as a student, Steffenhagen published from Königsberg manuscripts the contributions to Friedrich Carl von Savigny's “History of Roman Law in the Middle Ages” and the original text by Johannes Faxiolus “De summaria cognitione” discovered by him in Theodor Nut's yearbook of common German law (vol. 3, 1859). Steffenhagen published extensive catalogs of the legal (1861) and historical manuscripts (1867/1872) of the libraries, which to this day form a reliable basis for the important Königsberg manuscript collections. The description of the old German manuscripts of the Königsberg libraries appeared in Moriz Haupt's Zeitschrift für deutsches Altertum (Vol. 13, 1867). In addition to articles in various magazines, he also wrote other books on legal topics and published numerous publications on library studies.

In 1877 the Austrian Academy of Sciences entrusted him with the critical processing of the Saxon mirror glosses . As a preparatory work for this, he appeared in the meeting reports of the academy “The development of the land law glossary of the Saxon mirror” (Vienna 1881–1887, 9 issues).

Steffenhagen wrote around 150 articles as a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , mainly on people in law.
