Scream Payne
Scherrie Payne (born November 4, 1944 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American soul singer who was best known as a member of The Glass House and the girl group The Supremes .
biography
With the soul group The Glass House, Payne had half a dozen hits in the American R&B charts from 1969 to 1972, the greatest success being the top 10 single Crumbs Off the Table (1969), which also hit number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 reached. The band was signed to the Holland Dozier Holland label Invictus and released two albums here. In 1973, Payne finally moved to the Supremes to replace Jean Terrell and stayed there until 1977. At that time, however, the legendary girl group had already passed its commercial zenith. With the Supremes, Payne recorded three albums that were influenced by the disco sound of the time and produced some dance hits.
After the official dissolution of the Supremes, Payne and group colleague Susaye Greene stayed with Motown as duo Scherrie & Susaye . However, a released LP was unsuccessful.
As a soloist, Payne also recorded some records, although most of them were hardly noticed. In 1982 and 1984 she had smaller successes in the Billboard disco charts . In 1987 a solo LP called Incredible was released , which, with the title track, a duet with Phillip Ingram, made it to number 57 in the R&B charts. The successor single Testify landed at number 67.
Together with Lynda Laurence and Joyce Vincent, Payne still performs with the Supremes repertoire today, without the trio being officially allowed to use the group name.
In 2012, Payne released a new solo single, Let Yourself Go .
Her sister Freda Payne ( Band of Gold ) is also a singer.
