Henning Ratjen (born October 10, 1793 in Homfeld, today a district of Aukrug ; † January 21, 1880 in Kiel ), was a German lawyer , professor and university librarian .

Life

Henning Ratjen was taught by the local preacher before he attended high school in Kiel from 1810. In 1814 he began his law studies at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , which he continued from 1817 to 1818 at the Berlin University. He passed his legal examination a year later in Glückstadt , after having worked as a tutor in the meantime. In 1820 he became a lawyer in Kiel, received his doctorate there in 1823 and qualified as a private lecturer.

He became known through his almost 50-year career at the University Library in Kiel , where he began working as a sub-librarian in 1826. Since then he has limited his lectures to legal literature, as well as general literature and book studies. In 1830 he was appointed professor at the philosophical faculty and in 1833 librarian. In 1834 he arranged for the university library to be relocated from the upper to the lower rooms of the Kiel Castle , and in 1838 he rearranged the library after the fire in the castle and the castle chapel. In 1870 he published the history of the University of Kiel after he had already written articles about the Kiel Faculty of Law for the chronicle of the university in 1856 and 1860 . According to the text on the back of the reprinted edition, Ratjens work gives “a well-founded overview of the history of Kiel University from its foundation in the mid-17th century by Christian Albrecht well into the 19th century. In addition, Ratjen devotes himself to the status quo of the university in the 19th century, in which he not only describes its organizational structure, but also introduces institutions and faculties ”. On January 11, 1873, he celebrated his 50th anniversary in service, was then dismissed as a university librarian at his request in 1875, but remained a member of his faculty, but without lecturing . His successor as university librarian was Emil Julius Hugo Steffenhagen (1838–1919) from 1875 to 1903 .

Honorary positions

In 1848 he was elected a member of the Schleswig-Holstein State Assembly, and in 1854 a member of the Holstein Assembly of Estates . He was a board member of the Association for Schleswig-Holstein Antiquities and long-time President of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History until 1864.
