August Wetzel

August Wetzel (born September 24, 1850 in Wilster , Holstein, † October 10, 1907 in Kiel ) was a German librarian and historian.

Life

August Wetzel studied classical philology and history at the universities of Kiel and Leipzig from 1869 . He participated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and then worked as a private teacher.

Wetzel moved to Kiel University Library in 1877 . In 1881 he received his doctorate with the text "Translatio S. Alexandri" and was appointed curator in the same year. In 1894 he became senior librarian and in 1903 director of the library, succeeding Emil Julius Hugo Steffenhagen . Wetzel was secretary of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History , in whose journal the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History he published numerous articles.

Wetzel was also entrusted with cataloging the state library, the book collection of the state parliament of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein . This was the predecessor of the state library founded in 1895. Based on his thoughts on the structure and content of a regional library, the “Principles for the Administration of the Provincial Library” were formulated in 1895.
