Christian Knauthe

Christian Knauthe , also Christian Knauth (born December 19, 1706 in Görlitz , † January 7, 1784 in Friedersdorf an der Landeskrone ), was an Oberlausitz historical researcher and pastor in Friedersdorf. He is considered the most important local researcher of Upper Lusatia in the 18th century.

Life

Knauthe was born in Görlitz in 1706 as one of ten siblings, his father was Gottfried Knauthe. After attending the Görlitz grammar school , he began his studies in Leipzig in 1728 in the subjects of theology , philosophy , church and political history. He also learned the Sorbian language through contacts with Sorbian students . From 1732 he worked as a private tutor in Friedersdorf. Knauthe began his work as a preacher in 1736 in the Görlitz Trinity Church .

From 1741 he was the pastor of the Friedersdorfer parish. As was customary at the time, he devoted himself to teaching the children of the village and realized that a good school is essential for the future of the village . Therefore, he devoted himself to research. In 1765 Knauthe published a local chronicle of Friedersdorf for the first time. With his work Derer Oberlausitzer Sorberendung Comprehensive Church History from 1767 he wrote an important work of Sorabistics . In total he published over 65 pamphlets. He also set up a library with 4,600 works and a coin cabinet . However, his collection was destroyed by fire in 1754.

Knauthe died on January 7, 1784 in Friedersdorf. His tombstone was set into an outer wall of what was then the rectory.
