Karl Gottlieb Anton

Karl Gottlieb Anton (born January 31, 1778 in Wittenberg , † September 11, 1861 in Görlitz ) was a classical philologist .

Life

Karl Gottlieb was born as the son of the Wittenberg professor Konrad Gottlob Anton . After attending the Wittenberg City School and the Wittenberg Lyceum, he began studying theology, philosophy and philology at the university in his hometown in 1796 . After he had passed his exam as a candidate for the ministry on April 17, 1799, he continued his studies on May 19, 1799 at the University of Leipzig , among other places . On his return to Wittenberg, on October 17th of the same year, he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. Turning to the academic profession, he defended his disputation thesis de lingua primaeva ejusque in lingua hebraica antiquissima reliquiis on January 28, 1800 , and on January 30, 1800 he received permission to read a master’s degree. On February 19 of the same year he defended another disputation thesis with the title pro loco: quaedam de cognitione a priori, qualem Kantius statuere videtur, dubitationes and was then habilitated on February 24, 1800 as an adjunct at the philosophical faculty. In 1802 he became an honorary member of the Latin Society in Jena and subsequently published a German translation of two idylls by Theocritus, as well as a “philosophical examination of the various opinions about the oath” .

On March 19, 1803 he was elected vice rector of the grammar school in Görlitz , which he took over on May 12 and began on the 13th of the same month with the comparative inaugural speech “the office of an academic teacher with that of a schoolboy”. On May 6th, 1809 he was elected rector of the grammar school by the municipal authorities of the city of Görlitz. if he is never to lose the courage required for the same ”. On November 23, 1829 he received the title and rank of royal professor. On a part-time basis he managed the Milich library for half a century. His numerous writings belong to the classical, especially Greek philology, the Old and New Testament theology, the Reformation and school history, philosophy, folklore and mathematics. After celebrating his 50th anniversary in office on May 13, 1853, he retired on April 10, 1854. After several months of asthmatic complaints, he died.

On February 10, 1807, Anton married Florentine Friederike, the daughter of the then deceased Görlitz mayor Karl Gottlob König, in Görlitz. There are five children from the marriage, of which two sons and a daughter survived the father. From the children we know:

• Alwine Elfriede Anton was married on February 1, 1835 in Görlitz to the royal medical officer in Görlitz, Dr. Karl Adolph Moritz
