Bogumil Dawison (born May 15, 1818 in Warsaw , † February 1, 1872 in Dresden ) was a Polish-German actor .

Life

Dawison came from a poor Jewish family in Warsaw, where he experienced a youthful period of deprivation. He made his living as a copyist, sign painter, writer and reviewer. He learned German and French in self-study.

In 1837 he made his debut at the Polish theater in his hometown. In 1841 he was induced by guest performances by Julie Rettich and Ludwig Löwe to switch from the Polish to the German stage. Via Lemberg and the Hamburg Thalia-Theater he came to the Burgtheater in 1849 , where Heinrich Laube promoted the change to the character subject . His self-centered behavior led to a falling out with Laube.

From 1854 to 1864 he was engaged in Dresden , where he parted in disputes and in a dispute with Karl August Ludwig Quanter . Since 1864 he has been on very successful guest tours that also took him to America. Broken physically and mentally due to overexertion, he returned to Dresden, lost to art, and died there on February 1, 1872. The actor was buried in the old Annenfriedhof in the Dresden Südvorstadt .

He was a major character actor ( Shylock , Mephisto , Franz Moor ).
