Julie Rettich , née Gley (born April 17, 1809 in Hamburg , † April 11, 1866 in Vienna ) was a German - Austrian actress .

Life

Her parents - the father was an actor, the mother a popular opera singer - already prepared her for a stage career. She made her debut at the Dresden Court Theater in 1825 and continued her education under Ludwig Tieck's direction. Her rapidly developing talent enabled her to perform successfully at the Vienna Burgtheater as early as 1827 , for which she was won in 1830. Because of intrigues she returned to the Dresden Court Theater from 1833 to 1835 . In 1835 she took on another engagement at the Vienna Burgtheater, never to leave it again.

From 1863 she was forced to stay away from the stage due to illness and died on April 11, 1866 in Vienna in her apartment at Opernring  19 of "exhaustion of strength". An excellent actress and woman, she preferred to play tragic roles, which she understood in a manner commensurate with her high intellectual education. Her roles were particularly successful in plays by Friedrich Halms , with whom she was close friends.

Another successful actor was her husband, Karl Rettich , (born February 3, 1805 in Vienna), whom she married in 1833 and who worked with her at the Burgtheater. Retired in 1872, he died on June 17, 1878 in Vienna. Both grave sites are in the evangelical cemetery Vienna Matzleinsdorf (crypt 191).

In 1869 in Vienna-was Penzing (14th District), the radish street named after her.
