Karl Rettich , also Carl Rettich , (born February 3, 1805 in Vienna , † June 17, 1878 ibid) was an Austrian theater actor and director .

Life

Karl Rettich was the son of the Sigmaringen- born court secretary and former court actor Franz Rettich († October 16, 1818).

Engaged at the Hofburgtheater since 1821 , where he made his debut as Fridolin in the play of the same name by Franz Ignaz von Holbein on September 16, 1821 , Rettich went to Graz in 1824 on the advice of artistic director Schreyvogel, to the Kassel Court Theater in 1828 and returned to the Hofburgtheater in 1832, where he met his future wife Julie Rettich (1809–1866).

The couple had to leave Vienna because of intrigues and were engaged at the Dresden court theater in 1833 , Julie's former place of work. They returned in 1835 and were committed to the Hofburgtheater for life, where Karl Rettich was also director from 1865.

On the occasion of his 50th stage anniversary, he was awarded the Franz Joseph Order on September 18, 1871 . A short time later, on June 30, 1872, he took his leave from the stage.

His grave is on the Evangelical Cemetery in Vienna Matzleinsdorf (crypt 191); a copy of his portrait in the collection of the Vienna Burgtheater is in the Schleswig-Holstein Theater History Collection.
