Wilhelm Herchenbach (born November 13, 1818 in Neunkirchen , † December 14, 1889 in Düsseldorf ) was a German writer.

Life

After his school days in Neunkirchen , Wilhelm Herchenbach briefly took over a clerk's job in the mayor's office in Neunkirchen, worked as a bailiff's assistant in nearby Hennef and in 1833 got a job as an assistant teacher in Pempelfort in Düsseldorf . After attending the teachers' seminar in Kempen , he was employed as a teacher at the Maxschule in Düsseldorf. In 1850 he founded a local private school with a “higher curriculum for boys”. This private school was connected to an educational institution, which was mainly attended by the boys of foreign parents.

In the period from 1852 to 1854 he became the private tutor of Stephanie von Hohenzollern , daughter of Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and later Queen of Portugal. The children of Robert and Clara Schumann taught Herchenbach during the concert tours of their parents. In 1866 he ended his activity as a private teacher and increasingly occupied himself with writing and studying the local history of Düsseldorf and the Bergisches Land.

From 1868 Wilhelm Herchenbach devoted himself only to writing. In the series “Stories for Youth and People”, 200 volumes with legends, historical stories, etc. appeared. The books were published until the 1930s. Herchenbach's writing activity was characterized by his deep piety. The tension was clearly delineated between good and bad. In addition to the fantastic stories that earned him the nickname "Lüchherchenbach" (Lüg-Herchenbach) in his homeland, Herchenbach also appeared as the author of several travel books, textbooks and historical works.

Due to his great and recognized interest in local history, he was able to found the " Düsseldorf Historical Museum " in 1874 with the support of the Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, Ludwig Hammers . It followed in 1880, together with the archaeologists Constantin Coenen and Oskar Rautert, the founding of the "Association for the history and antiquity of Düsseldorf and the surrounding area" . He was the 'first chairman' of this association in addition to his responsibility for editing historical matters. In 1882 it was renamed " Düsseldorfer Geschichtsverein " . Until his illness in 1883 he remained its chairman and was then an honorary member of the association. As part of his work in this association, he gave many lectures between 1881 and 1883 and wrote articles for the monthly notebooks.

After recovering from illness in 1884, he was appointed city councilor of Düsseldorf and on January 26, 1885, he was made an honorary citizen of the city.

Wilhelm Herchenbach is buried in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery.
