Pyotr Semjonowitsch Wannowski
Pyotr Semenovich Wannowski ( Russian Пётр Семёнович Ванновский , scientific. Transliteration Pëtr Semenovic Vannovskij ; Nov. 24 * . Jul / 6. December 1822 greg. In Kiev , † February 17 jul. / 1. March 1904 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian general in the tsarist army and statesman .
Career
Wannowski entered as 1,840 officers in the Finnish bodyguard - Infantry Regiment one. He took part in the campaign in Hungary in 1849 and was used during the Danube campaign in the Crimean War from 1853–54 .
In 1857 he was appointed head of the officers' shooting school in Saint Petersburg and in 1860 an advisory member of the artillery committee. In 1861 he became the commander of the Pavlov Cadet Corps, which in 1863 was converted into a junior school. In 1868, Wannowski was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of the 12th Infantry Division.
In 1871 he took command of the 33rd Infantry Division in the Kiev district and in 1876 he was finally commanding general of the XII. Army Corps . In the Turkish War of 1877 he led the corps under the command of the heir to the throne of the Grand Duke, the later Tsar Alexander III. A short time later, Wannovsky became chief of the general staff of the army operating against Rustschuk , whose command he assumed after the heir to the throne of the Grand Duke returned to Russia.
After the peace agreement, Wannowski returned to Kiev as commander of the 12th Army Corps and was appointed Minister of War in 1881 . In this position he completed the reorganization of the Russian army , which extended to all branches of organization, tactics , etc.
In 1898 he resigned, but was appointed Minister of Education in 1901 . He resigned from this position the following year.
Pyotr Semjonowitsch Wannowski died in Saint Petersburg in 1904.
