Rafael Guastavino
Rafael Guastavino (born March 1, 1842 in Valencia , † February 1, 1908 in Asheville ) was a Spanish architect and builder who created a large part of his works in the United States and there spread the construction of the Catalan vault .
He trained as an architect in Barcelona , where he also built the Batlló factory. In 1881 he moved to the USA and patented the Guastavinian system there, which was known in Spain as the exposed brick vault or also the Catalan vault and was a traditional method of construction in Catalonia , Valencia and Extremadura .
From 1881 he lived in New York , where he became famous for his system of covering vaults with bricks and layers of mortar. He founded the "Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company", which focuses on this area. His participation consisted in the design and preparation of the vault. He died in Asheville in 1908. His work was continued by his son, Rafael Guastavino Expósito .
