Kurt Diedrich (born March 1, 1905 in Wilkenhof , Pomerania , † August 25, 1982 in Lübeck ) was a German schoolboy and non-fiction author . He is known nationwide as the founder of the standard work on the management and administration of a school, which has been reissued several times .

Life

Origin and education

Kurt Diedrich came from a family of teachers and continued this tradition in the third generation. His birthplace was a remote forest school in the Office Sydow in Schlawe county . He spent his childhood in the small town of Ratzebuhr in the Neustettin district .

After graduating from elementary school , Kurt Diedrich completed his teacher training from 1919 to 1925. He attended the preparatory institutes in Belgard an der Persante and Jastrow, and most recently from 1922 to 1925 the teachers' college in Dramburg . Because of the surplus of teachers , he initially hired himself for three years as a private tutor - including at Hamborn Castle in the Paderborn district - and as a substitute teacher at village schools in Mülsengrund ( Free State of Saxony ). He used this time to continue his private studies in literary history as well as Latin and Greek .

As a village school teacher in the Danzig area and military service

Kurt Diedrich wrote a home and hiking book about the Mariensee and its surroundings.

In 1928 the Senate of the Free City of Danzig commissioned him to manage the Niederklanau rural school , and in 1929 the one in Schönbeck , both located in the Danziger Höhe district. There Kurt Diedrich turned to folklore and local history and published several smaller works, including articles in the daily newspaper Danziger Latest News and self-published the booklet Rund um den Mariensee . A home and hiking booklet (1931). In 1933 Diedrich moved to the Danziger Niederung district , where he ran the Trutenauer Herrenland elementary school, which was also one-class. He held this position until 1945.

In 1929 he married Meta Kindel from Niederklanau. The couple had the daughter Ingeborg and the three sons Erhard, Gundo and Udo. The latter later also became a teacher.

During the Second World War , Diedrich took part in the campaigns against Poland and France from 1939 to 1940 as a Wehrmacht soldier . At the beginning of May 1943 he was called up again and was assigned to the Wehrmacht as a German teacher for foreign war volunteers, and later as a troop supervisor and battalion clerk with the rank of sergeant . The retreat from Hungary took him to the area near Steyr , where he was taken prisoner by the US .

New start in Lübeck

On March 10, 1947, he was released from captivity to Lübeck, where he met his 16-year-old daughter Ingeborg again. She and her classmates at the Viktoriaschule in Danzig had already been evacuated in autumn 1943 , first to Hela-Heide , then to Mecklenburg and finally to Lübeck. Together with her neighbors, Meta Diedrich and her three sons fled westwards from Trutenauer Herrenland on April 8, 1945 - at a very late stage. From Danzig they managed to cross to Copenhagen on the refugee ship Orion , where they witnessed the surrender on May 8, 1945. This was followed by stations in several Danish refugee and internment camps before all four were finally released in January 1948 and the whole family reunited in Lübeck.

After working as a gardener for around a year, Kurt Diedrich was returned to school service on July 1, 1948 after the denazification process had been completed. Until 1953 he taught at the Eichholz elementary school , then at the Anna-Siemsen-Schule , where he was appointed vice principal in 1957 . He retired in 1967 at his own request.

Activity as a specialist author

Kurt Diedrich was a nationally known specialist author in the field of schools . From the perspective of the school management, he dealt with issues of school administration and internal school reform . To this end, in 1958 he published the manual for the management and administration of a school in the service of educational work for Luchterhand-Verlag . A guide for school principals and teachers to simplify and modernize their administrative tasks. This guideline found widespread use in educational practice, and Diedrich revised it again and again in the course of the extensive school reforms from the 1960s to keep it up-to-date and to adapt it to new developments. The book thus became a standard work for school practice. The last edition that Kurt Diedrich was still involved in was the 7th edition under the title Management and Administration of a School , which appeared in 1980. An 8th, completely revised edition came out in 1997.

His other book publications were at home and at school. A contribution to the internal school reform (1961), which was also primarily aimed at a specialist audience, and the parenting guide Our Child and School (1963).

In addition, he published lengthy articles in educational journals and numerous articles in the Lübecker Nachrichten .

Vice-principal a. D. Kurt Diedrich died on August 25, 1982 at the age of 77 in Lübeck. He found his final resting place in the Vorwerk cemetery .
