Juan Álvarez Benítez
Juan Nepomuceno Álvarez Benítez (born January 27, 1790 in Santa María de la Concepción Atoyac, † August 21, 1867 in Acapulco ) was the interim president of Mexico from October 4 to November 12, 1855 .
Life
He was a landowner of Indian descent. In 1811 he supported an (unsuccessful) campaign for Mexico's independence from Spain. He was also involved in the revolt of 1822/23 that resulted in the overthrow of Agustín de Itúrbide .
In 1847 Álvarez fought against the United States.
Two years later he became governor of the new Guerrero state . When Antonio López de Santa Anna reestablished his rule in 1853, Álvarez's position was not in danger. Not until 1854 did he rise against Santa Anna, who wanted to take power in Guerrero.
After Santa Anna fled into exile, Álvarez took control of the government. But he soon resigned in favor of Ignacio Comonfort , his ally in the fight against Santa Anna.
His reign was the beginning of a liberal movement, later known as “La Reforma,” which culminated in the 1857 Constitution.
The airport in Acapulco was named after him.
