Menno Hanneken (also: Meno ) (born March 1, 1595 in Blexen ; † February 17, 1671 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian and superintendent of the city of Lübeck.

Life

Born as the son of the pastor at the Blexener St. Hippolyt Church Gerhard Hanneken, Menno studied at the University of Gießen from 1617 after attending school in Bremen and Stade . In 1619 he accepted a position as vice rector of Count Anton Günther in Oldenburg , then went to Wittenberg as a master's degree on June 1, 1622 , where he joined the Orthodox Lutheran theologian Nikolaus Hunnius . He was later to become his predecessor as superintendent in Lübeck. Following his studies in Wittenberg, he went on a study trip to Leipzig , Altdorf , Tübingen , Basel and Staßfurt in accordance with the customs of the time . In 1626 he became professor of philosophical morality , but swapped this position a year later for the professorship for theology and Hebrew at the University of Marburg . There he officiated in 1633, 1635 and 1638 as dean of the theological faculty. In 1637 he was rector of the university. In addition, he acted from 1643 to 1646 as the Ephorus of the Hessian Scholarship Institution .

In October 1646, the council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck appointed him superintendent, which was connected with a sermon position at the Marienkirche . In this office he consistently represented the standpoint of Lutheran orthodoxy, which included defending the city's denominational unity against all forms of mystical spiritualism . For example, he forbade early Pietist hours of edification and after a dogmatic interrogation forbade the preacher Jakob Taube any activity in the congregation. 1664, he interacted with the Council, from Poland who fled Socinians to grant no asylum.

During the unrest of 1664 between the citizenry and the council, Hanneken took on a mediating position. In a memorandum, he proposed to Mayor Gotthard von Höveln that a mixed commission be set up to investigate the corruption allegations against council families. Even if the council did not accept this proposal, Hanneken's efforts played a decisive role in the fact that the cash court process came about in 1665 and with it a new basis for the city's financial policy. This was followed in 1669 with the Citizens' Recess, a new constitutional basis for greater participation of the citizens in the city's legislation.

For funeral Hanneken 1671 created Dietrich Buxtehude a double counterpoint -Satz of Luther - chant With peace and joy I depart , which he in 1674 as part 1 of predatory and Joyful One Way ( BuxWV 76), the funeral music for his father re-used, and published .
